Based on The Playmaker by Thomas Keneally  (Schindler's List), this compelling piece tells the  story of the first play performed in Australia, in  1789, by the inmates of the Sydney penal colony.  Lieutenant Ralph Clark is ordered to mount an  amateur theatrical production to celebrate the  King's birthday - but he must choose his cast  from the convicted criminals of the island. In a  story filled with compassion, love, and horror,  Clark discovers the terrible beauty of his new  land and the redemptive power of art.
